The exhibition title, borrowed from a work of the same name, serves as a programmatic key: The “one-eyed punk horse” exemplifies Kohl’s interest in displacement, fragmentation, and subversive humor. His visual worlds are populated by figures that elude any unambiguous interpretation and, precisely because of this, create narrative openness. Typography plays a central role in this: words and titles are not mere labels, but an integral part of the composition. They permeate the picture plane, commenting on, contradicting, or expanding what is seen, and blurring the boundary between text and image.
The works created at the Château de Monboucher were produced within the context of an artist-in-residence program initiated by Gallery HMH. At this third branch of the gallery, Peter Kohl engaged intensively with the surrounding landscape—though not in the sense of classical landscape painting. Rather, he transforms his impressions of the château, garden, and surroundings into a idiosyncratic, at times absurd iconography. Nature appears here not as an idyllic space, but as a projection surface for grotesque transformations and visual commentary.
Following the exhibition, a key work will remain in the collection of the Château de Monboucher.
