Form Follows Fun – A Curatorial Perspective
The group exhibition Form Follows Fun at Galeria HMH explores the vibrant dialogue between playful intuition and compositional maturity. In a world often dominated by conceptual rigidity, this showcase celebrates the immediacy of the artistic gesture and the visual joy of narrative.
At the heart of this exploration is the young artist Maxima Maria Kinsky. Her monotypes captivate through a remarkably free handling of form and color. Operating beyond academic dogma, Kinsky reveals an artistic maturity that startles in its intuitive confidence. Her works are far from mere color experiments; they are balanced compositions where the spontaneity of the moment merges with deep emotional layering.
This unburdened, childlike clarity finds its counterpart in the iconic works of Ed Heck. His cartoon-like animal depictions utilize the aesthetics of the comic to mirror universal human emotions. Heck reduces form to its essence, proving that humorous simplicity can be one of the highest forms of artistic communication.
An energetic counterpoint is found in the "explosion paintings" by Andreas Streicher. Here, the playful manifests as controlled eruption. Streicher captures the moment of genesis and dissolution; his works act as snapshots of cosmic joy, where color transforms into pure energy.
A visionary highlight of the exhibition is the homage to Vincent van Gogh’s "Starry Night" by Harry Rüdham. Using a meticulous micro-collage technique, Rüdham reconstructs the dancing clouds and nocturnal swirls from thousands of tiny, hand-cut human silhouettes. What appears from a distance as an Impressionist gesture reveals itself upon closer inspection as a profound commentary on the human condition: the larger figure, the "greater whole," exists only through the multitude of the individual.
In conjunction with works by global legends such as Pablo Picasso and H.R. Giger, it becomes evident that "play"—the ludo—has always been a central engine of art history.
Form Follows Fun invites to seek seriousness within the lighthearted and to rediscover the world through a lens of unbridled creativity.
